Georges Leekens has not coached since 2019. He is celebrating his 75th birthday today, but can he still come out of retirement and take everyone by surprise?

This May 18, George Leekens celebrates its 75th anniversary. “Long Couteau” had a long and rich career, first as a player, then as a coach. A pillar of FC Bruges, he successfully converted, first winning the Belgian championship title as coach of Blauw & Zwart in 1990, before the Belgian Cup in 1991.

After stints at various clubs and half a season of madness with Excelsior Mouscron, Georges Leekens took charge of the Red Devils, becoming a real media figure who has never left the news, or barely. Algeria, Lokeren, Bruges and the Devils again: Leekens split, but also obtained results almost everywhere.

Since 2019, however, he has been retired, or thereabouts, after a final delicate stint in Iran. “I was asked to become a sports director, but I refused. I worked until I was 71 and although I am still passionate about football, I believe that during the pandemic it was the right time to stop”, he declared to the RTBF.

A retiree in peace, therefore. But who can’t help but leave the door open, or at least slightly ajar. “You never know with Georges Leekens,” jokes the former coach of the Red Devils. “It’s always hard to refuse.”

Could we see a return of “Long Knife”, perhaps in a behind-the-scenes role rather than on the bench of a club? It’s highly unlikely… but as he says himself: you never know.
