The English federation, looking for a new coach, has started negotiations with the representatives of Thomas Tuchel, without a position since May and his departure from Bayern Munich, Sky Sports News said on Tuesday. The FA has entrusted the reins of the England team to Lee Carsley, former coach of the Espoirs, while waiting to find a successor to Gareth Southgate, who left in July after the Euro 2024 final lost against Spain.
“It now appears that Tuchel is the Federation’s first choice, and he could quickly be confirmed in this position if negotiations progress well, although many details regarding his contract still need to be ironed out”wrote the British media. Tuchel ticks all the boxes in the robot portrait established by the FA, starting with the prize list, which he established in particular with Paris Saint-Germain (2018-2020) and Bayern Munich (2023-2024).
Good memories at Chelsea
The 51-year-old German has especially benefited from a high rating in England since the treble won in 2021 with Chelsea (Champions League, European Super Cup, Club World Cup), a few months after being fired from PSG. He has been without commitment since the end of the 2023-2024 season, finishing in second place in the Bundesliga behind Bayer Leverkusen. However, he is still under contract with Bayern Munich.

If the Tuchel hypothesis currently seems the most solid, the British media have also reported a pronounced interest from the FA in Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard’s contract expires at the end of the current season with Manchester City.
The England team has so far only had two foreign coaches, the Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson and the Italian Fabio Capello.
