The Council of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) decided on Wednesday, ahead of its 74th Congress in Bangkok, to launch the first Women’s Football Club World Cup in January-February 2026.

This first Women’s Football Club World Cup should bring together 16 teams in a still unknown host country, said the governing body of world football, noting that this new competition will be held every four years, just like the Men’s Club World Cup expanded to 32 teams.

“Further details will follow in due course,” noted FIFA, adding that to facilitate the continued global development of women’s clubs and based on requests from the confederations, it has also been proposed that an additional women’s club competition be organized in years without a Club World Cup from 2027.

FIFA also announced that the Philippines will host the first Women’s Futsal World Cup, scheduled for 2025.

Furthermore, the executive of the body adopted the women’s international calendar for the period 2026-2029, reducing the international windows from six to five to promote players’ rest, limit travel and less disrupt the championships.

The 74th FIFA Congress is scheduled for Friday in Bangkok, with the participation of more than 3,000 delegates from nearly 211 member associations of the body.

According to world football’s governing body, the Congress will focus on various issues related to international football, including the selection of the host country for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Representatives of the 211 member countries will have to vote on Friday to decide whether the competition will be played in Brazil or within the European trio of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.
