At the end of their contract on June 30, Raphaël Varane and Anthony Martial will leave Manchester United. The two Frenchmen said goodbye to the Old Trafford crowd on Wednesday evening after the Red Devils’ 3-2 victory against Newcastle.

The image of Raphaël Varane, all alone in the middle of the pitch at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening, did not fail to make the rounds on social networks. The French defender, who officially announced his departure from Manchester United at the end of the season in a moving video, lived his last moments in the “theater of dreams”, his garden for three years.

The “Frenchies” Varane and Martial say goodbye to Old Trafford

Before the match, the former French international (93 caps) was warmly greeted by the Red Devils supporters. Absent from the squad due to a muscle injury which has kept him away from the field since the beginning of April, the 31-year-old could however be fit to play the final Premier League match against Brighton on Sunday, then the FA Cup final against City on May 25. But it was from the stands that he witnessed his teammates’ victory against Newcastle (3-2).

After the final whistle, Varane, supported by captain Bruno Fernandes, was cheered for many minutes by the fans, just like Anthony Martial. The 28-year-old striker, also at the end of his contract in June, will not be offered an extension and will leave United this summer. The Frenchman, who arrived at the club in 2015, was treated to applause from the supporters, who also sang a song in his honor for the last time.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the two men. If Varane has no shortage of proposals (Lens, MLS, Saudi Arabia), no avenue is currently favored. For Martial, a return to Ligue 1 was also mentioned, unless the latter turns to Turkey or Saudi Arabia.
