Emery, Digne, Martinez… The immense joy of the players and staff of Aston Villa, qualified for the next Champions League

Thanks to Tottenham’s defeat against Manchester City this Tuesday in the Premier League (2-0), Aston Villa ensured their qualification for the next Champions League. And the Villans, gathered in their stadium, celebrated well.

One result, two consequences. By winning this Tuesday on the Tottenham pitch (2-0), Manchester City took a big step towards the Premier League title before the very last day at the end of the week. But the Skyblues have made others happy… on the Birmingham side. Because the defeat of Spurs mathematically ensured 4th place for Aston Villa, and qualification for the next Champions League. A C1 that the Villans, winners of the 1981-1982 edition, had not tasted… since 1983.

Coincidentally with the calendar (or not?), the players and staff of Aston Villa were all gathered this Tuesday at Villa Park, for the club’s annual awards evening. Where screens obviously showed the match late at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Leading to some superb scenes at the final whistle.

Emiliano Martinez in form

On its social networks, Aston Villa has published videos in which we see a happy and moved Unai Emery, an Emiliano Martinez showering the audience with champagne, or a Lucas Digne shouting his joy.

If the Villans are so excited, it’s because their performance is capital. And rare, since it is only the seventh time in the Premier League era that a non-Big 6 club has qualified for the Champions League, after Blackburn, Newcastle (three times), Leeds and Leicester.
