Contested under the sun and in front of 88,000 spectators over three days, the 6H of Spa 2024 was marked by huge traffic jams to reach the circuit (some spent more than three hours there), two huge crashes and a permanent spectacle.

After more than two hours of interruption at the red flag to repair the damage to the slides after the flight of the Cadillac of an Earl Bamber paying dearly for too great risks in the climb towards Les Combes (he took with him the BMW M4 of poor Sean Gelael), the race direction decided that the race would be extended by 1h44. A very rare and respectful decision applauded by the public, in agreement with the circuit and the mayors breaking the law of silence. Well done to them!

The first private Porsche in 35 years

The only downside is that this accident and this restart behind the safety car somewhat distorted the result. While we should logically have seen a double victory from the Ferrari 499Ps, which came back well after the disqualification of the polemen (under the weight), it was the Porsche 963s which won the jackpot. And while the N°5 (with the crash of Michael Christensen) and the N°99 of an excellent Julien Andlauer (clearly the man of this Saturday!) led at the start of the race, it was ultimately the Jota N °12 deprived of Will Stevens and Callum Ilott who won twelve seconds ahead of the factory version of local hero Laurens Vanthoor, Kevin Estre and André Lotterer a little below consolidating their lead in the world championship before the next big meeting of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Behind the two Porsches, the two Ferraris and the Porsche Proton of Andlauer-Jani, the Toyotas limited the damage with 6th and 7th places, Alpine showed up with a 9th place, while Peugeot took the last point.

Disappointment for BMW with 11th place for the first WRT of Dries Vanthoor and Lamborghini (retirement).

Porsche double also in GT3

In LMGT3, the big losers are the Iron Dames. Starting from pole, Bronze Sarah Bovy, faster than her Silver teammate, had nevertheless started the race perfectly by creating a lead of around forty seconds, unfortunately annihilated by the first safety car following the crash involving Hanson’s Jota. and the M4 of Ahmad Al Harthy (we will therefore not have seen Maxime Martin and Valentino Rossi in the race).

However, they were still leading with an hour to go before a stubborn wheel at the last pitstop, a small contact at the Source and a final stop two laps from the finish forced them to settle for 4th place, the victory going to the Manthey Porsche of Shahin-Schuring-Lietz ahead of the damaged sister car during the tests of the championship leaders Bachler-Sturm-Malykhin. The Lambo Iron Lynx of Perera-Cressoni-Schiavoni completes the podium.

No luck either for Tom Van Rompuy who after a spin at the exit of Blanchimont after being pushed by the BMW of Al Harthy was forced to retire, gearbox broken for a Corvette decidedly lacking in reliability.
