The curtain fell on Saturday afternoon on Burnley in the Premier League. After a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on the 37th and penultimate day, Vincent Kompany’s troops can no longer avoid relegation.

The Clarets had to win to have any chance of remaining at England’s top tier and they also got off to the best start. Sander Berge, ex-Racing Genk, infiltrated the midfield well and served Jacob Bruun Larsen (25.), ex-RSC Anderlecht, who hit the crossbar. But they were not able to benefit from the bonus for long: Arijanet Muric had no recourse against the devastating strike from young Pedro Porro (32nd). Mickey van de Ven (82.) finally sealed the fate of Kompany and his teammates at the end of the match with a precise kick into the lower left corner. Manuel Benson and Mike Trésor both started on the visitors’ bench. Benson came on in the 73rd minute, Trésor in the 81st minute.

With one day remaining, Burnley, 19th with 24 points, cannot catch up with Nottingham Forrest (29pts) from Matz Sels and Divock Origi, the first club safe in 17th place. Nottingham will also host Chelsea later in the evening (6:30 p.m.). Tottenham are in fifth place with 63 units.

Kompany has been in charge of Burnley since mid-2022. During his first season, the former defender helped the team return to the first division by winning the league title. However, confirmation did not happen this year, resulting in an immediate return to the second division.
