A fifth goal, a second place and kisses before Italy and France: Loïs Openda has revived since the penalty episode
A savior named Openda: the Red Devil scores the only goal of the meeting between Leipzig and Heidenheim (VIDEO)

“To be honest, it was one of the hardest games I played, but we defended very well,” reacted Loïs Openda who celebrated her goal by sending kisses towards the stands. “They were for my wife and my son who were there in the stadium.”

With only two goals conceded in six Bundesliga games, Leipzig has the best defense in the championship. On the attack side, Marco Rose’s team relies almost exclusively on its two attackers, Loïs Openda and Benjamin Sesko who scored two thirds of the goals (6/9). Over time, this dependence is even more impressive: 54% of Leipzig’s goals (49/90) were scored by the Belgian and the Slovenian over the past year. No other duo has done better in Europe over this period.

One of the hardest matches I’ve played.

It was also by giving an assist to Sesko during the match against Augsburg (09/28) that Openda regained confidence after his setbacks from the penalty spot (he failed with the Devils against Israel then with Leipzig against Union Berlin) and its three matches without being decisive. In the process, the Liégeois found the net himself before confirming four days later with another decisive pass against Juventus. His goal this Sunday is in the same direction: Openda is relaunched.

“Loïs is very important to our team”underlined Arthur Vermeeren who celebrated his first start in the Bundesliga, with second place (17 pts) up for grabs, thanks to the sharing of Bayern (17 pts but a better average) in Frankfurt (3-3). “We are Leipzig, we always want to win and try to reach the top of the table”motivates Openda who will therefore be able to take the path to Tubize with a light mind.

However, the pressure will return quickly. With the new absence of Romelu Lukaku, the Leipzig striker will try to finally score his first goal under Domenico Tedesco.
