The 5th stage of the Tour of Italy run between Genoa and Lucca smiled on a breakaway. Starting 75 kilometers from the finish with three other runners, Frenchman Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) won in the sprint. He finally beat the peloton, where the pink jersey Tadej Pogacar was, by 11 seconds.

This stage, which promised a sprint finish for the peloton, therefore did not have the expected epilogue. Until the end, the sprinters’ teams seemed to control the four escapees, who never had a lead of more than a minute and forty.

But the collaboration between Benjamin Thomas, Michael Valgren (EF Education-EasyPost), Enzo Paleni (Groupama-FDJ) and Andrea Pietrobon (Polti-Kometa) worked wonderfully, so much so that the four men kept at bay a peloton that came back to less than a minute with 22 kilometers to go.

Peaceful day for Pogacar

This agreement ended when the Italian Pietrobon attacked 800 meters from the line. Launched from too far, he could not resist the return of the Dane Valgren and the winner of the day. For Thomas, five-time omnium world champion and American bronze medalist at the Tokyo 2021 Games, at 28 years old, this is his first success on a Grand Tour and the first for his team this year.

In the general ranking, no change in the top-10 is to be reported. Big favorite of this 107th edition of the Giro, Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) is still 46 seconds ahead of Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers).
