“We have lost one of the great references of our football. My condolences to his family and loved ones. RIP », wrote Lionel Messi in an Instagram story after learning of the death of César Luis Menotti at the age of 85. The former Argentina coach, who won the world title in 1978, died on Sunday May 5. He was born in the same city as the former Barça and PSG star: Rosario.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is not the only Argentine personality to have reacted to Menotti’s death. “A football master has left us, thank you for these profound exchanges in which you left your mark on us”, wrote Lionel Scaloni, the current coach of Argentina. Argentinian President Javier Milei also posted a message on his X account to express his “deep sadness for the departure of the leader of a group which gave the country one of its greatest joys”.

Menotti led the Argentine selection to the world title in 1978 and led it again during the 82 World Cup in Spain (elimination in the 2nd round).

He also won the Spanish King’s Cup, the Spanish Super Cup and the Spanish League Cup, a competition since defunct, with FC Barcelona in 1983.
