Paulo Fonseca regrets replacing Zhegrova and takes responsibility

Paulo Fonseca, coach of Lille, regrets his choices which led to Lille’s defeat against Lyon (3-4) while his team led twice. He particularly regrets having replaced Edon Zhegrova in the second half.

Lille missed the opportunity to get on the podium by losing in added time against Lyon (3-4), Monday during the 32nd day of Ligue 1. Losc nevertheless led 2-0, then 3 -2 in the 85th minute of play before breaking down. At the end of the meeting, Paulo Fonseca assumed his responsibility for this failure which left his team in fourth place, two lengths behind Brest, third. He notably justifies his choice to bring in defender Alexsandro in place of Edon Zhegrova (75th), who came into play in the first period in place of Yusuf Yacizi (26th).

“We have a lot of difficulty defending with Edon”

“The truth is that in the second half we didn’t play,” explained the Portuguese coach at a press conference. “I thought that if we didn’t have the ball we had to defend better. That’s why I brought Alexsandro on but there’s no problem, I take responsibility. I’m responsible for everything that happens in the team and today, once again, I have responsibility for the choices, the choices and the results.”

Fonseca had already explained the reason for this change on Prime Video. “The team didn’t have the ball and we have a lot of difficulty defending with Edon. If we don’t have the ball, we have to defend and I did between Alexsandro to defend well.” But the Brazilian defender displayed great difficulties in the game, once on the pitch.

Which caused some regrets at Fonseca. “Now yes. After the match it’s always easy but I take responsibility.”
