Rome Masters 1000: Stan Wawrinka against a qualifier in the first round

Stan Wawrinka faces a qualifier in the first round

Published today at 2:56 p.m.

Will Stan Wawrinka (ATP 87) take advantage of his time in Rome to win his third match of the year on the ATP circuit? The 39-year-old Vaudois in any case benefited from a draw which should be within his reach for the first round of this Masters 1000, which begins Wednesday in the Italian capital.

For his entry into the running, “Stan the Man” will face a player from the qualifiers, whose identity is not yet known. If successful, the three-time Grand Slam winner will have a lot to do, since he would meet in the second round the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime (ATP 20), recent unfortunate finalist in Madrid.

In 2024, Wawrinka has won only two of the eight matches he has played: in the first rounds in Buenos Aires and Marrakech. Otherwise, the native of Saint-Barthélemy was eliminated six times from the start. Will his return to the Eternal City, where he was once a finalist (2008), be synonymous with a new start, before Roland-Garros and the Paris Olympics?
