Canadian skater of Danish origin Nikolaj Sorensen has been suspended for at least six years for “sexual abuse”.
This was announced by the Office of the Sports Integrity Commissioner (BCIS) on its website on Wednesday, specifying that the sanction is “likely to be the subject of a challenge or a call “.
Last January, Sorensen, who is under investigation following allegations of sexual assault, and his partner Laurence Fournier Beaudry withdrew from the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in Calgary.
USA Today reported the previous week that the BCIS was investigating Sorensen following allegations of sexual assault made by an American figure skating coach and former skater from Hartford, Connecticut, in 2012.
These allegations have never been proven in court.
Sorensen previously denied the allegations in a post on Instagram, but indicated that he and Fournier withdrew from the Canadian Championships because they consider their participation would be a distraction.
Sorensen and Fournier, who train in Montreal, finished in ninth place at the World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal last March, the same result as at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
