Akira Schmid will not keep a lasting memory of his first match in the cage of the Swiss A team. In Brno, as part of the Euro Hockey Tour, Patrick Fischer’s men lost 3-1 against the Finland. The Genevan Tanner Richard saved the honor in the Swiss camp.

Akira Schmid, goaltender for the New Jersey Devils but regularly sent to the AHL, made a good impression in the initial third. Just like his teammates Tyler Moy (8th) and Sven Senteler (15th) who missed the opportunity to break the deadlock, their delivery crashing into the opposing post. Enterprising in the offensive phase, Switzerland could have led the score.

Weary for Schmid, author of 26 saves against 35 for his counterpart Larmi, his performance was not as successful during the last third. The 23-year-old Bernese missed Matila’s missed throw in the 49th minute by missing the puck with his cane and then with his pliers. Add to that Mike Künzle’s unconverted penalty in the 39th minute… It’s difficult in these conditions to hope to beat a Finnish team which, overall, managed and controlled the game. Patrick Fischer’s squad suffered its 11th defeat of the season in 15 matches.

Switzerland, which played without Nico Hischier, Jonas Siegenthaler, Philipp Kurashev, Gaëtan Haas or Calvin Thürkauf, will face the Czech Republic on Sunday (from 3:50 p.m. on RTS2) for its last preparation match before the World Cup in the Czech Republic (10-26.05).
