Fernando Alonso believes it is a “good sign” that Aston Martin is one of the teams touted as a potential destination for Adrian Newey, as the famous designer leaves Red Bull in the first quarter of 2025.

Although a decision regarding his future has yet to be revealed, Adrian Newey’s name has been linked to Ferrari and Aston Martin for a few weeks now, while more recently rumors have suggested that the Briton could also decide to join the Mercedes team which has been in difficulty since the introduction of the new technical rules in 2022, which could be an even more interesting challenge for Newey.

Regarding the rumor linking him to Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso says he would obviously be happy to be able to work with Adrian Newey and the Spaniard is full of praise for the Briton.

“Well, he’s a sports legend. First of all, I feel privileged to be driving in Formula 1 at the moment and to have shared the sport over the last 20 years with Adrian, as a competitor, it’s a privilege. » Alonso said this Thursday in Miami.

As for how much he would like to be able to work closely with Newey at Aston Martin should the Briton decide to join the team, the two-time world champion replied: “The fact that he is linked to Aston Martin is a good sign and good news for us. »

“But we are also very satisfied with our technical team. We will see what he decides and whether or not he continues to work in the paddock. The most important thing for us is to focus on the new regulations, especially on 2026.”

But before thinking about 2026, the focus is on this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix for Alonso and his team who currently sit fifth in the Constructors’ World Championship ahead of the sixth round of the year with twelve points behind Mercedes.
