There is frustration and disappointment at the moment among Montreal Canadiens fans.

It’s normal.

That said, I don’t want to be the one to bring even more bad news… But let’s say that Ivan Demidov’s playing time today in the KHL will not please CH fans.

You have to start from the beginning of the meeting to add context.

In the first period, Demidov was one of the most involved players on the ice and he earned a point with his effort.

He also collected an assist during the second period on his team’s first goal of the match:

It’s after that that things get bad, however.

SKA trailed by two goals with 10 minutes left in the second period and Demidov received a penalty that could very well have gone uncalled.

When we see the opposing player diving on the ice, we might believe that he exaggerated a little… And Demidov’s reaction says it all:

Even though the referee’s decision seemed doubtful, the SKA head coach decided to make his young player pay.

How? By benching him for the rest of the second period… And for almost the entire third period.

The Canadian prospect spent a grand total of 7 minutes and 32 seconds on the ice:

  • 6 appearances in first period (4:24)
  • 3 appearances in the second period (1:48)
  • 1 presence in third period (1:20)

Let’s say that Roman Rotenberg has a special way of using Demidov and it sure doesn’t make the Canadiens’ managers happy.

Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton must be in good shape at the moment: Reinbacher and Laine who seem to be seriously injured in a preparatory match, Demidov who remains on the bench after receiving a penalty which he did not deserve…

Luckily the weather is nice outside in Montreal today!
