Dan Campbell’s home address was shared publicly on social media by a classmate of his daughter earlier this year, according to a report from Detroit News.
The Detroit Lions coach was ultimately forced to sell his home after multiple incidents of harassment and unwanted visitors.
The Detroit News reported Monday that according to police reports obtained, several people showed up at Campbell’s residence in Bloomfield Township, Michigan, on the evening of Jan. 28, hours after the Lions lost the NFC Championship to the San Francisco 49ers.
According to the report, a member of Lions security contacted Bloomfield Township police that night to report that Campbell’s address had been shared online. An investigation by police and NFL security revealed that a male classmate of Campbell’s daughter posted the address of the Campbell family home on Snapchat, writing, “This jerk tried to go there.”
Campbell and his wife, Holly, were still in the Bay Area at the time, the report said, but he became “anxious for his daughter’s safety” after cars and people drove up outside the home. The Campbells’ daughter was home in Bloomfield Township that night with her boyfriend, who “went outside in his vehicle and flashed his headlights at the approaching people, urging them to leave,” the report said.
The Campbells eventually told their daughter and her boyfriend to leave the house, and the report says police patrolled the residence for the next few days.
According to the report, their daughter’s classmate was identified on Jan. 29 and interviewed by investigators. He said he and his friends were “distraught” about the Lions’ loss to the 49ers and that he “found humor” in the Snapchat post. The classmate and his friend then drove to the Campbells’ home, parked on the street and “yelled mean things at the house” before leaving, the report said.
A police investigator informed Holly Campbell that the incident did not meet the standards necessary to pursue criminal charges against the classmate.
“Holly’s only concern was that their address was public and she fears that next season people will know when her husband is out of town and take advantage of the situation,” the investigator wrote.
The Campbells moved to an unidentified new location earlier this season, according to The Detroit News. They have not been harassed since. The house was listed for $4.5 million last week and a deal was pending, according to Crain’s Detroit Business.
Dan Campbell declined to discuss his decision to sell his Bloomfield Township home last week, but he said he loves Lions fans.
“Our fans are fantastic,” he said last Friday. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else or with any other team.”
