The good and bad moves of the week in politics

The last political week was full of twists and turns, both in Quebec and in Ottawa. The panelists of the segment “Ça fait débat!”, at VAT News noon, presented on Friday the best and worst shots of the last few days, according to them.

Here are their selections:

Antoine Robitaille

Good move: Simon Jolin-Barrette who describes Pablo Rodriguez as an infiltrating agent of the PLC within the PLQ, even going so far as to say that the Quebec Liberal Party is a branch of the federal Liberal party.

“I found that image to be quite murderous. Especially since there are a lot of people in the PLQ, even elected officials, who are former members of the PLC. That’s going to be one of the fault lines in the upcoming race.”

Bad move: the Supreme Court of Canada which refuses to translate into French judgments dating from before 1970.

“This is the second time in three years that the Commissioner of Official Languages has said: ‘the judgments that you publish on your site, dear Supreme Court, you must translate them into French, but [aussi] judgments before 1970.”

“Chief Justice: ‘We don’t have money for that and it’s not that important.'”

Elsie Lefebvre

Good move: Kamala Harris

“I find that in the last few days and the last few polls […] The gap is widening in her favor. Her arrival, the convention, the debate… She’s following the game plan, she’s studious. She’s had other interviews this week, including with Oprah Winfrey. So, quietly but surely, despite what’s happening with Donald Trump, it’s having an effect.”

Bad move: Justin Trudeau

“He lost a by-election, that’s not nothing. He’s lucky that this week the Bloc Québécois and the NDP decided to continue supporting the government. So, I think he’ll sleep better this weekend, but really, nothing’s going well: his political lieutenant left him.”

Joëlle Boutin

Good move: the Bloc Québécois

“The by-election at the beginning of the week that was won by the Bloc in LaSalle–Émard–Verdun is major, because it was a Liberal stronghold.”

Bad move: city councilor Paolo Galati who bought groceries at Costco and a $1,000 Apple watch with taxpayers’ money.

“It disgusts me when public funds are misused. […] I find that unacceptable. He left the caucus, but are there sanctions? I hope that will encourage us to put in a few more safeguards to verify.”
