Martín downplays his advantage: “Pecco remains the favorite”

Jorge Martín has had a very good start to the season. Winner of the sprint in Qatar and the main race in Portugal, he appeared less dashing in the United States but only lost points on Maverick Viñales, winner of the two races, and on Pedro Acosta, fourth in the sprint and second in the Grand Prix. The Pramac driver even increased his lead by three units over his main pursuer in the championship, now Enea Bastianini, author of the same harvest as him during the weekend.

The Spaniard, however, is not paying attention to his 21-point lead at this stage of the season. “I’m not looking at it at the moment, I don’t like to think about it”assured Martín as he left Texas. “I’m happy that we already have 80 points, it’s not bad. I think we have to be satisfied and stay on this trajectory. We’re working quite well, we’re focusing on ourselves and we’re improving the results compared to last year. [Austin] is a track on which I had a lot of difficulty in the past and, this weekend, we took quite a few points. And then, obviously, it’s sure that it’s better to be leader than tenth.”

Martín does not know if he is heading for another duel with Pecco Bagnaia, not because the reigning champion only occupies fifth place in the general classification after two disappointing weekends, but because they are not the only ones to be able to win now. In any case, he believes in the Italian’s ability to bounce back and still makes him the strong man of MotoGP.

“I think there are still many drivers who can fight for the championship. I believe Pecco remains the favorite because he won last year, he is number one. The competition is strong: we have Marc [Márquez], Pedro is very, very good and consistent, so you never know, Enea was super strong all weekend. What’s important is to be fast everywhere and we have to focus on that.”

At the start of the championship, Martín seems to have found the consistency that he may have lacked in the past. The GP of Americas certainly marked the end of a series of podiums for him but he remains the only driver to have finished all events among the top four, whether sprints or main races.

“All the champions have been consistent so we have to be. I think we’re doing a good job, five podiums out of six. We have to continue working like that. If a bad weekend, it’s a fourth place, I can be super happy. When I get my chance, I will have to aim for victory.
