Expressed in inches, the size of a bike essentially refers to the dimensions of the wheels, although the frame dimensions can also vary depending on the model. 12, 18, 20, 24 inches… There is a wide variety of sizes for a child’s bike, which can make the choice difficult for parents. Here are some tips for selecting the bike that is perfectly suited to your child’s size.

Since children do not all grow at the same speed, age is not a sufficient criterion to determine the dimensions of the bike to choose. In fact, a 3-year-old child who is already over 100 cm will need a larger model than a little one who reaches 90/95 cm. This is why height is a more reliable parameter, and specialists recommend basing it on it to choose a perfectly adapted children’s bike.

As a general rule, 12- to 18-inch bikes are suitable for children between approximately 85 and 125 cm tall, which is equivalent to young children aged 2 to 7 years old. To give you an idea, 1 inch (1″) is equivalent to 2.54 cm. Below 16 inches (40.64 cm), we are mainly talking about “discovery” bikes, i.e. models suitable for young children who are discovering the movement of pedals and handling handlebars.
