Our tips to prevent your bills from skyrocketing

The news that everyone was dreading has arrived. The Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, has announced a new increase in the price of electricity on February 1st. This will be 9.8% for consumers who have subscribed to peak/off-peak rates and 8.6% for those with basic rates.

Electricity prices have jumped 72% since 2019

The price of electricity continues to soar. Since 2019, it will have jumped by 72% in total, with an increase of 25% in 2023 alone. The least penalized will therefore necessarily be those who live in collective housing, well insulated and heated by gas. You are not one of them? Then you risk seeing your bills increase.

Our solutions to reduce your electricity consumption

To avoid finding yourself with improbable bills at the end of the month, it is wise to stick to some simple rules:

  • Turn off standbys as soon as possible

  • Using LED lamps

  • Turn off the lights when leaving a room

  • Use the “eco” program on your washing machine

  • Adjust the temperature of the hot water tank

  • Block cold air inlets

To achieve this, we have found the best tips on the internet. Our favorite? These wool balls that reduce clothes drying time by 40%and which therefore allow to divide by two the time of use of the dryer, the most energy-consuming appliance in our home. With more than a thousand evaluations, the drying balls seem to have convinced Internet users.

On the radiator side, it is a reflector that we rush to buy. This aluminum film panel to stick behind each radiator in the home allows reflect heat back into the roomso that it is not absorbed by the wall. This low-cost trick could save 5 to 10% of energy, or up to €200 per year for a typical household.

To continue to make maximum savings, we also think about equipping all our lamps with LED bulbs, and opting for motion sensor bulbs for our exterior. Better still! How about garden lighting… solar! This is how to do without electricity, winter and summer, to light up your terrace or driveway.

If this is not already the case, we arm ourselves with a connected plug to control our electricity consumption. Connected to your smartphone or tablet, the smart plug allows you to remotely control the devices connected to it. In addition to the fun aspect of the thing, the connected socket allows you to turn your devices (lamps, radiators, etc.) on and off whenever you want, even remotely.

Fan heater: ideal for heating small rooms at a reduced price

For small rooms, such as the bathroom, forget about towel warmers or “toaster” radiators for heating! Instead, opt for a fan heater. The Dyson hot+cool is currently priced at €299 instead of €429 on the brand’s website. But a smaller device will also work, such as the Rowenta Comfort Compact.

Indeed, the fan heater is ideal for heating rooms of less than 20 m2. Generally inexpensive to buy, this type of heating allows you to heat small areas very quickly. Entirely mobile, they can be placed in a bathroom, then a bedroom or an office. Be careful though: this is really an additional heater. No question of leaving them on continuously!
