To heat their homes, the French spent an average of €1,684 in 2020, the equivalent of more than a month’s salary at the gross minimum wage. An astronomical expense item that is even more significant in homes heated by fuel oil and electricity.

So to avoid breaking the bank on electricity this winter, the best thing to do might be to opt for oil heating during the colder months. We’ll explain.

What are the advantages of an oil stove?

The oil stove should be an additional heater, to be placed in rooms of less than 50m2. In a bedroom therefore, otherwise a kitchen, a veranda or a living room. Effective and fast, this type of heating heats the room very quickly in which it is installed. Oil has a very high calorific value, so very little is needed to provide an immediate sensation of heat.

But what we appreciate most is its cost-effective. Inexpensive to purchase (unlike a wood stove), it is also economical to use. Indeed, the price of oil is much lower than that of other energies such as electricity, gas and even wood. For example, It is estimated that oil heating costs around 12 cents per kWh, compared to 15 cents for electric heating.

This model, from the Tectro brand, can heat a volume of up to 80 m2. It has a sensor, which allows it to stop automatically if the room temperature rises above 30°C, as well as a CO2 detector.

The disadvantages of oil heating

Of course, the oil stove also has its drawbacks. If it does not benefit from financial aid from the State, it is because it is not the most environmentally friendly. Indeed, oil emits gases and other particles that are harmful to the surrounding ecosystem. It is therefore important not to overuse it, and to use this heating system sparingly.

To avoid the various disadvantages of the oil stove, it is advisable to opt for a double combustion stove. This system allows to optimize the consumption of oil and to burn it almost entirely. The performances are then better in comparison with a single-wick stove. And the latter is also much safer, since it eliminates more carbon monoxide residues.
