Storms, thunderstorms, floods… the weather is getting out of hand in France
The lasting anticyclonic period which was established at the start of the second decade of January ended this Thursday, January 23, with the return of a disturbed ocean flow. Since then, the disturbances have continued with sometimes significant precipitation and sustained gusts of wind. Therefore, the next few days promise to be rough and will need to be monitored due to the risk of bad weather. In addition to the expected heavy rainfall, the risk of gales or storms is high from Sunday.
Towards a clear strengthening of the wind this weekend
If all eyes are on Ireland this weekend with depression Éowyn generating an extremely violent storm (new window)surveillance must also be put in place for other Western European countries, particularly France. In fact, the depressions will circulate at slightly more southern latitudes over the next few days, thus generating stronger winds here.
The first risky day will be Sunday with a clear strengthening of the wind from the south to southwest. Brittany will then be shaken by gusts exceeding 100 km/h on the coasts, up to 120 km/h possible on exposed capes. In the Breton interior, gusts approaching 100 km/h are not excluded. Over the hours, this unrest will spread to the Pays de la Loire, Normandy and the central regions with significantly less strong winds.

A night from Sunday to Monday to watch closely
Caution should also be exercised the following night. Secondary digging could quickly take place off the coast of Finistère, generating a powerful gale, or even a storm, between the Atlantic coast and the north of the Seine. If reliability is still quite limited at this time, several scenarios predict winds of 130 km/h on the coasts and 100 km/h inland.
These different windy episodes will each time be accompanied by sustained precipitation in the north-western quarter of the country and as far as Poitou. Thus, cumulative rainfall is expected to be significant and could lead to flooding locally. Beyond this deadline, other episodes of strong or even violent winds could occur between next Tuesday and Wednesday before the probable arrival of a calm for the last days of January.
