Towards a big return of the League Cup?

Having disappeared in 2020, the Coupe de la Ligue could make its return to French football. Several presidents of Ligue 1 or Ligue 2 clubs are reportedly pushing for the overhaul of the national competition.

Good or bad idea? Sometimes mocked by supporters, sometimes neglected by the big clubs, the Coupe de la Ligue could well make its return to in the coming years. According to information from the newspaper L'Equipe, several presidents of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 teams are campaigning for the establishment of a second national cup in parallel with the championships and the Coupe de France.

“A large number of clubs” would even be in favor of resurrecting the competition which disappeared in 2020, according to the daily newspaper. Abolished in order to lighten the calendar for elite teams, and in particular those playing on the European scene, the League Cup seems to have its supporters. According to information from RMC Sport, this is more akin to an inspiration from club leaders than a desire from Vincent Labrune or the LFP.

Additional revenue for clubs

Winner of the League Cup in 2020 and the most successful club in the competition with nine coronations including six in the last seven editions, PSG may soon have to review its schedule by adding several matches to its calendar.

To explain the desire to reinstate this cup, also deleted due to the relative disinterest of broadcasters, its defenders can rely on the reduction in the number of matches in the season with the passage of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 to 18 teams .

In the same way, professional clubs experiencing economic difficulties linked to the reduction in rights could benefit from a new influx of money thanks to the League Cup. However, if a working group composed of five elite leaders including Marc Keller (), Laurent Prud'homme (), Waldemar Kita (), Pascal Robert () and Arnaud Pouille () was considered , it has not yet met according to the newspaper L'Equipe.

A return with many questions

Without finding itself in direct competition with the Coupe de France, for which the FFF would be working on a medium-term reform, the return of the Coupe de la Ligue would also be of sporting interest for many professional clubs. The teams qualified for the European Cup would see their schedule increased, the other teams could take advantage of this to distribute playing time between their players.

Only a hypothesis for the moment, the return of the League Cup could also be accompanied by several major changes in order not to repeat previous mistakes. Thus, to date, the winner would not get a ticket to Europe and the question of the integration of the clubs of the future Ligue 3 has not been resolved.

For the moment, supporters of a return of the competition would consider several innovations to revive its interest, particularly around young people or more local confrontations (geographically) in the first round, but nothing is decided. Not even the effective return of this League Cup.
