In a gesture of protest against the restrictive measures imposed by the authorities, supporters of FC Nantes took the radical decision to boycott the upcoming match against AS Saint-Étienne at the stadium Geoffroy-Guichard. This decision follows the announcement that only 400 places would be allocated to Canaries fans in the visitors' park, while it can hold nearly 1,000.
A heightened sense of injustice
The discontent of Nantes supporters was exacerbated by the fact that during the first leg at Beaujoire, 800 places had been granted to Saint-Etienne fans. This disparity in the treatment reserved for the two camps was seen as a blatant injustice. Supporters' associations denounced this decision, believing that it hindered their legitimate right to support their team under fair conditions. Frustration reached its peak, leading to the announced massive boycott.
A worrying precedent for French football
This situation raises deep questions on the state of French football. The fact that the derbies between Saint-Étienne and Nantes have been taking place without the presence of visiting supporters since 11 ans is an alarming sign. This highlights the persistent tensions and the security challenges that French football is faced with. The restrictive measures, although aimed at preserving public order, stifle the atmosphere and the very spirit of the game.
A call for reflection and dialogue
This episode highlights the pressing necessity a constructive dialogue between all stakeholders to find lasting solutions. Authorities must reassess their approach to ensure fair treatment for all supporters, while ensuring security.
