Arsenal and Manchester United engaged in a fierce duel this Sunday, in the round of 32 of the FA Cup. The Red Devils, despite being outnumbered, won (1-1, 3-5 tab) at the end of the penalty shootout.
The national cups reserve their share of surprises during their journey, in France and abroad. LOSC, for example, must face Olympique de Marseille this Tuesday in the round of 16 of the Coupe de France. A round earlier, in England, Arsenal and Manchester United faced each other in the FA Cup this Sunday. This last named team qualified for the 4th round of the competition by eliminating the Gunners after a penalty shootout (1-1, 3-5 tab).
The evening began with an anecdotal first period, during which Arsenal failed to get the slightest attempt on target. In the other camp, the opportunities had not been more numerous. It was during the second act that the game shifted into a crazy scenario. The Red Devils opened the scoring with their only attempt on target via Bruno Fernandes (52') then found themselves outnumbered with the logical expulsion of Diogo Dalot (61'). This will have had direct consequences with the equalizer signed Gabriel. Accustomed to shaking the net with his head, the former LOSC resident this time sent a half-volley into the small net of Altay Bayindir, Manchester United's second goalkeeper who became a hero when he stopped Martin Odegaard's penalty (72′).
The 26-year-old Turkish international repeated the feat of the penalty shootout during which he repelled Kai Havertz's attempt. The Mancunian shooters, from Bruno Fernandes to Joshua Zirkzee via Amad Diallo, the young French defender Leny Yoro and Lisandro Martinez, took turns transforming the try. The former Lille player, who came on during extra time (104′), was surprisingly named third shooter on the Manchester United side. He didn't tremble, catching David Raya on the wrong foot, before winning his first penalty shootout. A few months earlier, he had failed at this stage during a duel between LOSC and Aston Villa in the Conference League quarter-finals. This outcome has not been repeated.
