FC Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup this evening in Saudi Arabia, outclassing Real Madrid (5-2). And yet, he played with ten for half an hour!
Very few people would have bet on a score as favorable to FC Barcelona as last October 26, during the Clasico at the Bernabeu (4-0). Real Madrid were doing much better since this rout and, conversely, the Blaugranas had considered giving up, even losing their leading position in La Liga. But tonight, they once again outclassed their age-old rival. Who opened the scoring in the 5th minute through Kylian Mbappé. But Barça had created two big chances just before and continued to play their game afterwards. Yamal (22nd), Lewandowski (36th sp), Raphinha (39th, 48th) and Baldé (45th) allowed FCB to win the Supercup, barely disturbed by the expulsion of Szczesny (60th), immediately followed by the reduction in Rodrygo’s score.
Raphinha and Yamal at the top, Mbappé was forgiven
Among the stars of this match were Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, who were dangerous every time they touched the ball. The two Barcelona wingers did a lot of damage to a dying Madrid defense, where the absences of Carvajal, Militao and Alaba (even if he was in the group) are terribly felt. On the Real Madrid side, Kylian Mbappé believed he was taking his revenge after his nightmarish first Clasico where he was flagged offside eight times in the first period alone. He opened the scoring in the 5th minute and was very inspired the rest of the time. It was on him that Szczesny committed the mistake which earned him his expulsion. Jude Bellingham was also good, fighting as always and trying to shake up his team.
Tchouaméni and Camavinga catastrophic
In terms of disappointments, no Barcelonans because everyone lived up to the event. While almost all Madrilenians have missed it. Notably Eduardo Camavinga, who led to the 1-2 penalty for a grotesque foul on Gavi in the area. And Aurélien Tchouaméni, so not made for this central defender position where Carlo Ancelotti lines him up. The two French people should have been expelled if it had not been for the very complacent refereeing of Mr. Gil Manzano…
FC Barcelona notes
Szczesny (2) : he conceded his first goal in the Barcelona jersey in the 5th minute, had nothing more to do until the 60th and this failed exit outside his area for which he was sent off after hooking his supporting foot by Kylian Mbappé. A bad evening for the Pole!
Koundé (6) : as often very good against Vinicius Jr (especially since the Brazilian was not having a great day), he delivered a marvel of cross for Raphinha’s victorious header on the 3-1 goal. A sumptuous tackle in his area in the 90th to prevent Bellingham from scoring.
Cubing (6) : he held on well against a very restless Mbappé. Not his best match but he had to change partners (Martinez, injured, leaving his place to Araujo) and shift to the left. Never obvious.
Martinez (Araujo (5), 28e) : injured, the former Bilbao player did not stay on the pitch for long. He left his place to an Araujo who was nevertheless in the eye of the storm for his departure desires. The Uruguayan did the job seriously, but he is not as brilliant as two years ago. Warned at the end of the match for having surrounded Mbappé.
Baldé (6): very inspired this evening, he forced Rodrygo to defend, which the Brazilian does not know how to do. And he scored his team’s fourth goal, in stoppage time in the first period, on a marvelous counter-attack.
Married (6): his knowledge of the game did his team a lot of good this evening. His duo with Pedri works well against opponents who do not put a lot of physical intensity.
Pedro (6) : really excellent in organizing the game, he sees everything before others, makes the right passes at the right time. Impressive !
Yamal (7): from his first shot, after two minutes, we understood that he was going to hurt Real. And there was no shortage of it. It was he who equalized in the 22nd minute in an action in which we thought we saw Lionel Messi again. His flat foot which deceived Courtois was so well placed…
Gavi (7) : It was on one of his anticipations that Camavinga conceded the penalty for 1-2. The Spain international was full of energy, getting everywhere, harassing his opponents and, above all, playing fair and forward. He’s coming back very strong!
Raphinha (8): he handily won his match in the match with Vinicius to find out who is the best Brazilian of the moment. A splendid double, especially with this superb head. Moreover, Courtois had released an equally beautiful one just before Mbappé opened the score.
Lewandowski (6) : he scores his team’s second goal, from a penalty, which should reassure him given the complicated period he is going through. He fought well but, compared to Yamal or Raphinha, he seems far, very far!
Real Madrid ratings
Courtois (7) : the best Madrilenian this evening, and yet he takes five! From the start, he made two incredible saves, in front of Raphinha and Yamal. He can do nothing about the five goals conceded.
Vazquez (4) : he got into trouble against Raphinha, so much so that Ancelotti took him out in the 52nd minute.
Tchouaméni (2) : he is in difficulty this season in the middle and it is even worse in central defense! After picking up the whole match, he should have been sent off for an attack in the second half.
Rüdiger (5) : within such a weak defense, the German cannot do everything. He was at his usual level.
Mendy (2) : he too experienced a nightmare facing a whirling Yamal.
Camavinga (2) : came out at half-time, which says a lot about what Ancelotti thought of his match. He conceded the 1-2 penalty for a stupid foul on Gavi and should then have been sent off for gross fouls.
Valverde (5) : Like Rüdiger, the Uruguayan was at his level but, surrounded by so much mediocrity, he couldn’t do much…
Vinicius Jr (2): It seems that he played but we have no proof of that… He was supposed to come back ten times stronger after his failure in the race for the Ballon d’Or. We’re still waiting!
Bellingham (6) : a big expenditure of energy, a lot of attempts to help his team get back on track but when Real doesn’t have the ball, it’s hard to do anything good!
Rodrygo (5) : he scores from a free kick after Szczesny’s expulsion but that’s about all he did good this evening. Baldé forced him to defend and he doesn’t like that.
Mbappé (6): he made us forget his disastrous first Clasico. But his team lost, so… He fought until the end, moved a lot and had a big chance at the end, superbly diverted by Pena.
