Although AS Saint-Étienne is not shining in the Ligue 1 standings this season, supporters have just won an unexpected distinction from the Professional Football League (LFP). Greens fans have been rewarded for their famous singing “Popolo polo popo po”voted best supporter song in Ligue 1 by the LFP.
A unique classification of supporter songs
In a ranking that is original to say the least, the LFP has revealed its list of the most notable supporter songs of the Ligue 1 championship. With more than 45,000 voters, it is the legendary song of the Saint-Etienne supporters who won first place, ahead of clubs like PSG, Lyon, Marseille and Nantes. This emblematic song, launched by the rival kops of the Cauldron and echoedcreates an impressive sound show which visibly appealed to observers and voters.
Recognition for legendary fervor
This unexpected distinction rewards the legendary fervor of ASSE supporters, considered among the best in the country. Despite recurring criticism, notably from the Rouge Direct collective for certain songs deemed homophobic, Saint-Etienne fans were able to stand out positively thanks to their “Popolo polo popo po”. A unifying song that takes the whole Cauldron on board and which proves, if it were necessary, that the passion of the Greens remains intact, even in difficult times.
A double-edged recognition
If this recognition of the LFP highlights one of the positive aspects of Saint-Etienne supporterism, it also raises questions. How can we reconcile this legendary fervor with the need to fight against excesses? Will the kops currently suspended for the use of smoke bombs be able to find their place at the Chaudron while preserving this unique atmosphere? A major challenge for authorities and supporterswho will have to find a fair balance between passion and respect for the rules.
