The atmosphere was electric at the King Abdullah Stadium during the last clash between Real Madrid and Mallorca in the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup, especially with the provocations of Pablo Maffeo which ignited the powder. After a relatively calm start to the match, the Spanish full-back would have sought to disrupt the course of the match by increasing the provocations, in particular towards Vinícius Jr. and Raul Asensio. The latter recalled a controversial episode linked to videos under legal investigation, further adding to the tension. The climax of the animosity was reached when an exaggerated gesture by Maffeo, simulating aggression, almost led to an unjustified expulsion of the Brazilian. Tchouaméni did not mince his words after the meeting, denouncing Maffeo’s “repeated attempts to stand out and destabilize”.
A prepared move?
In the Madrid locker room, the frustration is palpable, as revealed in the daily newspaper Mark. The players believe that Maffeo, accustomed to this type of provocation against Real, had prepared his role in advance, fueling an “underground war” which goes beyond the sporting framework. If Carlo Ancelotti was measured in his statements by sparing Mallorca from any direct blame, his players no longer hide their exasperation at what they consider to be a strategy calculated to disrupt their team. While tempers were heating up, only Jude Bellingham narrowly avoided a heavy sanction by holding back his nerves in the face of provocation. A situation that the two coaches, Ancelotti and Arrasate, deplored afterwards, calling for greater serenity to preserve the spirit of the game.
