Bordeaux – Stade Rennais: Rennes qualifies without shining to end the year
For its entry into the French Cup this season, Rennes traveled to Bordeaux and won after conceding the opener, and somewhat doubting.
Bordeaux 1-4 Rennes
For its entry into the French Cup, Stade Rennais traveled to Bordeaux. Demoted to N2, the Girondins were no longer playing in the same league as SRFC, and the Breton club therefore arrived as a big favorite, with an eleven little changed compared to the one which started against Angers last week. Gronbaek starting in the absence of Gouiri, Gallon started in goal and Faye in defense.
Feverish gallon, Truffert scorer
In white, Rennes kicked off and quickly took control of the ball, but discovered themselves in the image of a dangerous loss of the ball from Assignon (3rd), without seriousness. Gronbaek was overflowing to respond, without success either (5th). Kalimuendo struck first, off target (6th), like Gronbaek (12th). Gronbaek again broke through the defense but was unable to strike (16th), while Rennes spent the quarter of an hour without having conceded, but without having had a shot on target either.
But in the 18th minute, on a Bordeaux cross from the right, Gallon came out with his fists on Merdji, who seemed far from the ball, and covered by Hateboer. The goalkeeper's exit was punished with one touch, the ball returned to Bahassa who did not hesitate and lobbed Gallon, opening the score in the empty goal. 1-0 for Bordeaux.
With confidence, Bordeaux pushed on the counter, and Carroll on a volley from the right saw his shot repelled by Matusiwa. On the corner, Gallon once again came out very badly and worried his team, but the shot from a Bordeaux player went wide. Gallon again on a restart at the feet was completely missed (25th) but that did not benefit Bordeaux.
Before the half-hour mark, Rennes finally reacted, muddled in the game. Assignon on the right side found Truffert with a good cross at the far post, who won with a header (29th)! 1-1 and SRFC rushed to the attack with Assignon again finding Gronbaek, who missed his recovery from the penalty spot (31st).
Far from being reassuring, Rennes mismanaged the end of the first half and conceded a second goal just before the break… finally canceled for offside by Trichard, at the heart of a magnificent movement. New thrill but not the last since Merdji called upon Gallon with a low shot, the goalkeeper pushed back and the defense cleared away in disaster (45+2nd). Rennes had the last opportunity with the post found on a corner by Matusiwa.
Sluggish but victorious
Returning from the locker room, Rennes was still worried when Gallon missed a restart, but made the save on a shot following the counter (49th). James on the following action did not target his shot (50th), unlike Blas (51st) who found Diabaté on his way. Rennes pressed again through Truffert on the left who found Kalimuendo in the middle. The attacker missed his control and Assignon at the end of the action, struck with the left, pushed back by Diaw at close range (53rd). From a corner, Bordeaux struck through Merdji, off target (56th).
Rennes finally doubled the lead when Kalimuendo found a support point and handed it to Matusiwa, who with a feint served James. The Welshman beat Diabaté at the edge of the box with a right-footed shot (60th). 2-1 for Rennes, and Gronbaek gave way to Jota! Rennes still dominated and were finally rewarded with a third goal, when Truffert, receiving good work from Kalimuendo, hit the bar, and Assignon, having followed well, finished (75th). 3-1… and 4-1 two minutes later when Kalimuendo combined well with Blas and Jota to finish ahead of Diabaté!
Sampaoli immediately made 3 changes and we saw Ahamada for the first time! Rennes opened up and Merdji struck from afar, wide (84th). Managing with an additional team, Stade Rennes quietly ended the year 2024 with a qualification, after having doubts during this meeting.
