the tension mounts author of Dani Olmo

On August 9, Dani Olmo officially announced his departure from RB Leipzig to join the club of his dreams, FC Barcelona. However, he had to wait until August 27 to be registered, missing at the same time the first two days of La Liga. The fault is the Spanish rules on payroll, linked to the club’s income, debts and losses. Barça being obliged to count every cent, the 6-year contract signed by Dani Olmo was therefore not validated by La Liga. It was not until the injuries of Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen that president Laporte was able to register several players, such as Dani Olmo, but also Inigo Martinez, Marc Casado and Victor.

But in the case of the 26-year-old Spanish attacking midfielder, there was a subtlety. La Liga only allowed registration until the end of 2024, not for the full duration of his contract, exceptionally. Indeed, Christensen’s salary does not cover that of Dani Olmo, Barça was only able to obtain a temporary permit, until December 31, 2024. In two weeks, therefore, he will no longer be able to play with the Catalan club as well. in the league as well as in the Cup, nor in the Champions League since UEFA rules stipulate that a player must be registered by the national league in which the club plays.

A special clause, and the clock ticking

The winter transfer window will not yet be officially open, and a priori, Barça will not be able to record any form of money through this before December 31. The objective being to reach a solution before this deadline, to prevent the Dani Olmo clan from activating a very specific clause. Indeed, knowing the precarious financial situation of the Blaugrana, the player’s representatives had inserted a clause allowing him to leave the club without transfer compensation if he did not have a La Liga license by January 2025.

It is not Dani Olmo’s wish to leave in these conditions, 5 months after his arrival, he who has already proven himself decisive, with 5 goals in 10 La Liga matches in particular. But he would not agree to not playing during the entire second part of the season either… Barça is therefore in a hurry, and still hopes to recover the money owed from the sale of 49% of Barça Studios. Other possibilities are being explored, such as the sale of VIP boxes over 20 years in the new Camp Nou, or bank guarantees taken out personally by members of management. Time is running out, and if officially the leaders assure that the outcome will be happy, Dani Olmo’s adventure at Barça could well come to an end.
