OM: The prefecture strikes again

The ASSE-OM match in the Coupe de is scheduled for next weekend. As during the Ligue 1 match, the prefecture issued an order prohibiting the travel of supporters. A decision which follows previous incidents between the two camps and an assessment of the risks considered high for this poster.

This decree, signed by the prefect of the Loire, prohibits supporters of Olympique de Marseille from going within or around the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium, as well as in several strategic areas of Saint-Étienne. The text is based on a history of tensions between supporters of the two clubs, marked by violent incidents during previous trips. Among them, the unrest that occurred in January 2016 or April 2022, where clashes required the intervention of the police.

Despite the measures put in place during previous matches, the old and exacerbated rivalry between the two groups of supporters constitutes a major source of concern for the authorities. The prefect evokes a “lasting antagonism” which could give rise to serious disturbances to public order, in particular because of the violent behavior observed in the past.

The decree also specifies that despite calls for calm, certain Marseille supporters continue to demonstrate risky behavior, whether during travel or in their stands at the Vélodrome stadium. This ban therefore aims to prevent any overflow and to guarantee the safety of spectators present.

For ASSE, this measure could have repercussions on the atmosphere of the meeting. Deprived of their supporters, the Marseillais will have to concentrate solely on the field to hope for qualification.

This new meeting between the Greens and the Olympians promises to be decisive on a sporting level, but once again, it will be marked by strong security constraints, testifying to the importance of this historic rivalry.
