French team: UEFA changes the rules, Deschamps gets annoyed!

Didier Deschamps is not the biggest fan of UEFA's new rules regarding the draw for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers…

Final phase of the Nations League obliges, UEFA has tinkered with its draw for the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup to allow the teams playing in the final phases to have fewer matches to play to access the American World Cup. An idea which does not really enchant Didier Deschamps, who was moved by it at the end of the draw carried out today where the French team can “choose” its opponents based on its result in March against Croatia.

If the Blues win, they will be placed in the Ukraine group with Iceland and Azerbaijan. On the other hand, in the event of early elimination, Mike Maignan's teammates will play one more match, in a group that is easier on paper against the Czech Republic, Montenegro, the Faroe Islands and Gibraltar.

Deschamps refuses to be eliminated to have an easier group…

“We have seven potential opponents with different profiles (…) We are not going to play the quarter-final of the Nations League to be either in the group of five or in the group of four. This will have an impact, but what is more problematic is the supervision of these teams since it will take a lot of people to see our potential opponents. But it is the particularity of this draw which is not completely decisive,” explained Didier Deschamps, who is doing his best against bad luck.
