In great difficulty at the Vélodrome since the start of the season, OM finally managed to achieve a benchmark victory at home against Monaco (2-1), in a decisive shock for the top of the table. A victory which obviously delighted Roberto De Zerbi. The OM coach, at a press conference, did not fail to praise the collective performance of his players. “I hope this is the start of an important story at the Vélodrome. Many people come for this type of meeting, it was a shame not to be able to express themselves. There was undoubtedly a mental blockage, with players not necessarily calm, not always lucid, with the fear of making mistakes, anxiety. (…) This evening (Sunday), there were still a few errors, but I saw the players I have been training since the beginning of July. They played with courage, organization, high pressure, taking risks in dribbling, trying things, with shots, crosses,” rejoiced De Zerbi.
Greenwood and Rulli lit by De Zerbi
The Italian coach, delighted, only had good points to distribute. Even though Greenwood lost a huge number of balls, a toll overshadowed by his winning penalty, De Zerbi was quick to praise him after the match. “I think he had a great match, all the way around. He made some technical errors at the start of the match, it took him time to adapt, to understand the right position: Monaco had individual marking, with the midfielder, on the left side, coming closer to him. He figured out where to stand next on the field. He ran more and pressed more than in previous meetings, that’s an important fact too,” underlined De Zerbi.
Another player to be entitled to the compliments of de Zerbi, Geronimo Rulli, the Argentine goalkeeper author of decisive interventions, and whom the Italian coach does not fail to place in the category of great goalkeepers. “I think I have a great goalkeeper, a great man and a great leader. We are really lucky to have him,” expressed the OM coach after the meeting.
