ASSE: the referee responds to Cafaro for his red card against Rennes

Sent off directly after his handball against Rennes, ASSE striker Mathieu Cafaro received an explanation from the referee.

This Saturday, ASSE took another slap away against Stade Rennais (5-0, notes). Rather enterprising during the first period, and particularly at the start of the match with a post found by Cafaro, the Greens were then weighed down with the penalty on a hand from Mathieu Cafaro in the area, and his expulsion immediately. A double punishment that is quite difficult to understand for some, logical for others. Despite everything, the referee of the match, Marc Bollengier, came to explain himself at the end of the match on the microphone of beIN Sports.

Red explained, but not the two disputed actions

“Quite simply, given the situation that presented itself to us, you have an artificial increase in body surface area which leads to this penalty decision. I immediately see the sanctionable nature of the hand, on the field I have doubts whether there is contact between the ball and the arm. I let my video support colleague work. He is factual with me by telling me that there is indeed contact between the arm and the ball. I am invited to come and see the image. Once I arrive in front of the screen I see the contact of the arm and the ball. From that moment on, the technical decision is a penalty and after that, I ask my colleague from the video assistance to give me several angles to see the disciplinary side, that is to say a potential exclusion. You have a deliberate gesture which leads to this contact of the arm on the ball and a strike which goes towards the goal, reason why the disciplinary sanction in the continuity of the penalty and therefore the exclusion”, he expressed, in comments reported by EVECT.

No explanations for other situations

Then asked about two other actions which could have earned penalties in favor of ASSE, Marc Bollengier disappeared. Mathieu Cafaro, charged into the area in the first period, and Ibrahima Wadji, held by the jersey in the second, will therefore not have any further explanations on this subject. No more explanations, also, on situations similar to that of Cafaro which have only earned players yellow cards since the start of the season.
