Roberto De Zerbi has given OM new ambitions, but his methods against compact teams are criticized, raising doubts about his effectiveness.
Roberto De Zerbi arrived at OM with an ambitious project, accompanied by massive recruitment, allowing the club to return to the Ligue 1 podium. However, mixed performances against teams like PSG, Reims, Strasbourg, Auxerre and Angers raise doubts. Raymond Domenech criticized De Zerbi, stressing that“when the opponent, like Montpellier or Lyon, opens the game, Marseille gets carried away. But when they meet more compact teams, like Auxerre, it's another problem.”.
According to him, De Zerbi “does not seem capable of providing a real solution” against teams that close the game, and he added: “They won two matches against Brest and Montpellier, Brest was on the street. (…) They do not win on mastery of play. Against Lens, if there is no fault, that makes 2-2”. These remarks echo his past criticism of the Italian coach.
