Despite a remarkable season with Stade Rennais and a promising debut with the Algerian national team, Amine Gouiri was not selected among the five finalists for the title of African Player of the Year at the 2024 CAF Awards.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) initially revealed a list of ten contenders for this prestigious trophy.
Gouiri appeared there alongside players such as Achraf Hakimi (Morocco), Serhou Guirassy (Guinea), and Simon Adingra (Ivory Coast). But following a new selection, only Adingra, Guirassy, Hakimi, Ademola Lookman (Nigeria) and Ronwen Williams (South Africa) were selected. Gouiri, like Marseille defender Chancel Mbemba and Moroccan winger Soufiane Rahimi, was sidelined.
An absence which is surprising, given the performances of the Algerian striker in 2023-2024. With 11 goals and 3 assists in 41 matches in all competitions with Rennes, Gouiri was a key element for his club in Ligue 1 and in Europe. Under the colors of Algeria, he also made an impression, scoring 4 goals in 10 caps since his arrival in October 2023.
If this exclusion may seem unfair in the eyes of some, it also reflects the strong competition for this trophy. The presence of Achraf Hakimi, author of a brilliant season with Paris Saint-Germain, or Serhou Guirassy, on fire with Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, shows the high level of the candidates. In any case, the name of this year's lucky winner will be revealed during theThe CAF Awards ceremony will be held on December 16 in Marrakech.
