Bayern Munich goalkeeper Mala Grohs announced on Saturday that she was suffering from a malignant tumor. To support the German, who will be absent for an indefinite period, the Bavarian club has decided to extend her contract by one year, until June 2026.
In a video published on Saturday on the social networks of the Bayern Munich women's team, Mala Grohs announced that she was suffering from a malignant tumor. The 23-year-old goalkeeper of the Bavarian club, who will undergo treatment after the last examinations, will then concentrate fully on her convalescence and will be absent for an indefinite period.
“It's a challenge I never thought I'd ever have to face. But with everyone's help, I'm sure I'll overcome it and make a full recovery. I'm in very good hands with the doctors here in Munich and I can count on the support of my team and my club,” she said.
“She will receive all the help we can give her”
The proof: Bayern and the goalkeeper have agreed to a one-year contract extension, until June 30, 2026. “In these moments, sport takes second place. Our club and the entire FC family Bayern support Mala Grohs. Mala is a great and strong person, she will receive all the help we can give her. We will support her in her healing process,” said club president Herbert Hainer.
“The priority is that she recovers, it is so much more important than any victory on the field,” commented Jan-Christian Dreesen, CEO of Bayern.
The young German has been playing for Bavaria since 2019. After being the starting goalkeeper for team 2, she made her debut for the first team at the start of 2021. Since then, she has made 81 appearances in goal for Bayern and won three German championship titles as well as the Super Cup at the start of the season.
