Olympique de Marseille was coached by Jorge Sampaoli for 16 months. This is the longest period for a coach since Pablo Longoria became president of OM in February 2021. However, Sampaoli left of his own accord, unhappy with management's work in the transfer window. A decision that he would have regretted and that he mentioned at a press conference for his induction as coach of Stade Rennais.

Appointed coach of the Marseille club in February 2021, the Argentinian had signed a contract which linked him to the Marseille team until the summer of 2023. However, due to premature dissatisfaction with the summer transfer window carried out by the Olympique de Marseille, Sampaoli sent his resignation to the directors and the president Pablo Longoria on June 30, 2022.

In comments reported by RMC Sportthe former coach of loon made his mea culpa. “I would say that my level of demands is becoming too ambitious or too strong in relation to the demands of the clubs, which is why I left. I realize that these ambitions are excessive and unattainable, I know that this is something that I probably need to change.”
