With just one victory in four days, Paris Saint-Germain can be worried about the rest of their journey in the Champions League. In the event of elimination in the first round of this new format, the status of the Ile-de-France club would take a hit. But this possible fiasco does not seem to bother Qatar.
Halfway through this regular season, the Champions League ranking clearly underlines the difficulties of Paris Saint-Germain. The capital club, beaten at home by Atlético Madrid (1-2) on Wednesday, no longer even appears among the play-offs and finds itself virtually eliminated. Nothing very reassuring when we know that the Parisians still have to face Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Even coach Luis Enrique, very often optimistic, said he was worried about the rest of the journey.
An early elimination in this new formula would be a stain on Paris Saint-Germain. We could almost speak of a humiliation for a club which has long been included among the contenders for the coronation. However, this disaster scenario would not encourage management to call the project into question. Coach Luis Enrique retains the full confidence of his superiors who are preparing to formalize his extension. And higher in the hierarchy, Qatar is observing this start of the season with a certain detachment, writes the newspaper L'Equipe.
Qatar less ambitious
Since the end of the 2022 World Cup, the host country no longer has the same interest or desire to invest in Paris Saint-Germain. The Qataris are patient and ready to accept that the project, essentially based on young players not yet confirmed, first goes through a possible downgrading to European level. We are a long way from the great ambitions of leaders a few years ago. It seems that the club led by Nasser Al-Khelaïfi has decided to dream less big.
