The Champions League match between Bayern Munich and Benfica Lisbon (1-0), Wednesday evening, was marked by drama. A Bavarian supporter suffered a medical emergency in the stands of the Allianz Arena at the start of the match. Resuscitated several times on site, he was transported to hospital but died on the way, according to a club press release.
Icy atmosphere in Munich
As a sign of respect, the main group of ultras, the Südkurve, stopped their chants in the 3rd minute and removed their emblematic flags. Bayern also limited their coverage of the match. During the entire match, only the Benfica crowd was audible among the 75,000 spectators. A megaphone announcement at the half-hour mark confirmed the situation to the supporters present. After the final whistle, the club expressed its solidarity with the relatives of the deceased. Captain Manuel Neuer and coach Vincent Kompany stressed at a press conference that the team had not celebrated its victory, marked by a feeling of sadness.
