Selections: No return to Krasnodar for Safonov

In balance with Gianluigi Donnarumma to start PSG / Atlético, Matvey Safonov will not find Krasnodar and Russia during the international break in November.

Surprise starter last Saturday against , Matvey Safonov hopes to start this Wednesday evening's PSG/Atlético Madrid clash in the Champions League, having already played the first European match of the season against Girona last September.

Luis Enrique has not yet decided between Safonov and Donnarumma

But when asked about his goalkeepers this Tuesday, Luis Enrique did not want to say which of Safonov or Donnarumma would be in the Parisian goals against the Madrilenians: “You’ll find out tomorrow.” I will decide tomorrow morning after a good cappuccino who is the goalkeeper best suited to start”replied the Spanish coach at a press conference.

One thing is certain, Safonov will stay in during the next international break. Present in an expanded list of 39 players for the next Russian training camp, the PSG goalkeeper will not return to the country, like last month. It was the goalkeeper coach of the Russian selection who announced it to local media Sport-Express.

Russia's goalkeeping coach explains Safonov's absence

“Firstly, if he wasn't playing at club right now, we would definitely call him for training. Secondly, we want to take advantage of unofficial meetings to give a chance to other goalkeepers who have performed well. Third, we don't know if he will play the match against Atlético. We talked and we thought that as long as he is doing well, we should leave him there (in Paris). If there were official matches, we would definitely call him”confided Vitaly Kafanov.

Last month, Russia did not play any friendly matches, but had a training camp, and Safonov remained in Paris. According to some Russian media, his lawyers advised him to stay in because of his legal problems with his ex-wife and not to return to the country, otherwise he would no longer be able to leave Russia.

Russia's goalkeeping coach assured him that Safonov's non-call-up was only linked to the absence of friendly matches. This November, Russia will play two: the first against Brunei on November 15 in Krasnodar, the city of Safonov's former club, the second against Syria on November 19 in Volgograd.
