Broadcaster of 8 of the 9 Ligue 1 matches, the DAZN platform currently finds itself in an impasse. The new broadcaster could therefore withdraw from December 1, 2025 if the objectives set are not achieved.
1.5 million or withdrawal from DAZN
After the agitation around TV rights this summer and the signing of a contract with two broadcasters. DAZN for 8 matches and beIN Sports for 1 match per day. However, the number of subscribers for the main interested party is not sufficient. Revealed by the Team three weeks ago, the streaming service reached 500,000 subscribers in three months. It’s less than Mediapro with the Téléfoot channel (600,000) over the same time frame.
The new broadcaster was counting heavily on the OM-PSG Classic last Sunday to see its number of subscribers increase by 90,000 people. This was not at all the case due to piracy and illegal streaming. Indeed, 150,000 people watched the meeting on Telegram.
In the signing of the contract linking Ligue 1 to the DAZN platform until 2029, a clause allows the platform to withdraw if it does not reach 1.5 million subscribers by December 1, 2025. This are figures set by Shay Segev, CEO of DAZN. For comparison, Amazon Prime Video managed to reach 1.7 million subscribers at the end of its first season with its Ligue 1 pass.
Despite the promotional attempts made by the British company, the new arrivals are not massive. If the set figures are not reached, the LFP will have to find a new broadcaster or launch its own channel, a project which was already on the table last summer. We'll keep you updated on DAZN's progress throughout the season.
