a former player soon to be banned for life?

Former player Lucas Paqueta, who plays for West Ham in the Premier League, could be banned for life from football for obstructing the investigation he is the subject of in a case of illicit sports betting.

The threat hangs over Lucas Paqueta. For several months, the former Lyonnais, who now plays for West Ham, has been the subject of an investigation in a case of illicit sports betting, which could seriously compromise the rest of his career. While he is accused of having voluntarily taken yellow cards during four Premier League matches, between November 2022 and August 2023, the Brazilian is also in the eye of the storm for obstructing the investigation and non-cooperation, according to several British tabloids.

The English Football Association accuses the 27-year-old of not being able to provide his old mobile phone. The latter had been seized at the start of the affair before finally being returned to him. But while investigators would like to have access to the phone again, Lucas Paqueta allegedly threw it away after buying a new cell phone.

The Federation would therefore put pressure on the midfielder to be purely and simply banned from football for life. Lucas Paqueta, who has always denied the accusations against him, should still at least finish the season. His hearing is scheduled for next March, and the verdict should not be rendered before summer 2025.
