The technical director (a sort of sporting director), member of the club during the last seven championships in the championship, chose to say stop according to information from The Athletic website.

Arriving in 2012 and key man in the Cityzens project in recent years, the former Barça player was instrumental in several very big moves made by Manchester City in the transfer window. Txiki Begiristain was thus at the origin of the recruitments of Fernandinho, Kevin De Bruyne and even Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias and Ederson. Above all, he managed to convince his friend and ex-teammate Pep Guardiola to join the club in 2016.

A smooth transition

For almost eight years, Txiki Begiristain and Pep Guardiola have worked hand in hand to shape a squad capable of fighting on all levels in England and on the continental scene. Brilliantly since the Skyblues are four-time title holders in the Premier League and won their first Champions League title in 2023.

Still according to information from The Athletic, Txiki Begiristain will help the club find his replacement and will stay at his side for almost six months, between January and June 2025, to facilitate his integration into Manchester City.

Not necessarily a clue about Guardiola’s future

Unsurprisingly, the information surrounding the future departure of Txiki Begiristain will revive rumors around the end of Pep Guardiola’s adventure at Manchester City. Certainly, the Catalan technician is reaching the end of his contract and continues to remain vague about his future. But the departure of Txiki Begiristain would above all be a personal choice for The Athletic.

The Basque leader therefore decided to hang up the phone. So much so that Txiki Begiristain initially wanted to retire from operations at the age of 55 but his friendship with Pep Guardiola and his involvement in the City project would have pushed him to extend the experience until he was 60 years. After reaching this pivotal age in mid-August 2024, the time to bow out has arrived.
