“We will evaluate the issue of protest cards among ourselves”

Carlo Ancelotti spoke out after Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over Alavés, asking about the number of yellow cards his team received for protesting against the referee.

Seven fouls from Real, four yellows; ten fouls from Alavés, zero yellows. What do you think of what you saw today? “I repeat what I said the other day. The criteria has changed and we have to get used to it. That’s all. We haven’t gotten used to it yet. We received four yellow cards for protesting. We have to avoid protesting and that’s it. Fair or unfair, we have to adapt to the new rules.”

Did Mbappé leave the match with a physical problem? “He’s fine. He was a little tired and asked me to take him out to avoid any problems.”

A very good first half… but how do you explain the let-up in the last 15 minutes?Simply because it’s football, football is like that. When you think the game is over, it only takes one small slip for them to score the first goal and the confidence of the opposing team and your own distrust take over. That’s what happens a lot in football. We don’t want it to happen, but sometimes it does. We have to emphasize that for 60 minutes the team played very, very well and that gives us confidence.”

What did he say to the referee: “I thought the yellow cards for protests were over the top. I told him I had to make sure my players didn’t do that, there was no problem, we talked about it.

Mbappé’s match: “He’s doing very well, we’re doing very well in attack. For an hour, the team played very well, looking for opportunities in different ways, in transition, filtering passes… The team is improving, it’s good for us, the schedule is very demanding. Sunday’s game (derby against Atletico) will also be very demanding.”

The Alavés coach complained about a shot by Endrick. He claims that Real should have finished with 10 men: “I can’t give my opinion because I didn’t see the action. We talked after the game, but there was no problem, no confrontation.”

Vinicius’ complaints at the break: “We have to evaluate the issue of yellow cards for protests. And we will do it among ourselves.”

Modric, who is the captain and can therefore speak to the referee, also received a yellow card: “It’s complicated to answer that. If the captain received a yellow card for talking… there is only one person who can explain it, it’s the referee.”

The changes: “I brought Vallejo on so that Militao could rest a bit. The goal wasn’t Vallejo’s fault, we were a bit disoriented. We conceded two goals in a few minutes and I changed the line a bit for the last few minutes. Nothing special. Jacobo Ramón was supposed to come on, but since we conceded the second goal, I preferred not to.”

Bellingham: “He continues to progress, he provided an assist to Mbappé, he had a very complete match. He needs to get used to playing in the box a bit more, like last year. It’s more complicated against a team that has a low block like Alavés. I’m asking Bellingham to do that kind of work, not to score goals, we can score at any time.”
