“It’s a shame, we’re only going backwards,” Cherki very angry at ’s defeat

Ryan Cherki thought he had saved a point for his team, but finally lost at the end of added time against (2-3), this Sunday at the end of the 5th day of Ligue 1. The fault was a lack of forward play, according to the attacking midfielder of the Gones.

The Groupama Stadium is in meltdown. Rayan Cherki heads towards the Lyon supporters, takes off his jersey and throws it angrily to shout his joy. We are playing the 90+3 and the playmaker has just offered his team an almost unexpected equalizer against OM, this Sunday, at the end of the fifth day of Ligue 1. The story is beautiful. Rayan Cherki is playing his first minutes in the championship of the season, he who had been sidelined until now to favor his departure. No satisfactory offer reached his ears during the transfer window and the Lyon player finally decided to extend his contract shortly before the match.

With this liberating goal, OL thought they had secured the minimum in a match with an incredible scenario, marked by the early expulsion of Leonardo Balerdi, the penalty missed by Alexandre Lacazette, the opening of the score by the ex-Olympian Duje Caleta-Car and the two goals on the counter scored by Marseille defenders. But a hint of drama was still needed, and it was Marseille’s Jonathan Rowe who provided it, unleashing an unstoppable curling shot in the last second after Ryan Cherki’s goal.

After the final whistle, Rayan Cherki did not hide his anger on DAZN. “It’s a disgrace. They’ve been down to ten since the fifth minute,” fumed the young Lyonnais. “We’ve been leading here for years and years and we’re only going backwards. All the time. Again. The match is going by, we have 3,500 chances, but despite that, we’re only going backwards. When we’re leading, we’re going to have to bury the teams that come to play here. When we’re leading, we have to know how to score one, two, three, four, five.”

“There was nothing for them”

According to the silver medalist at the 2024 Olympics, “there was nothing” for the Marseillais in this match. And yet, “they leave with the three points. “They are showing off and we leave with zero points,” he fumed.

And Rayan Cherki adds another layer on OL’s attitude: “We are only going backwards whereas normally, when you see all the opportunities we have created, it ends at 3-0, 4-0 or 5-0”.

Is it a mentality problem? “I don’t know,” replied the scorer of the evening. “We’ll have to keep working. The only positive point is that we create seven or eight chances per half. We’ll have to continue like that, but this time, bury the opponents who come here.” The next one will be Olympiakos. The Greek team will travel to the Groupama Stadium on Thursday, for the start of the Europa League.
