Coupe de France – 16th: Vito Mannone HEROIC, LOSC eliminates OM and advances to the round of 16

Taken to penalties by the rage of the OM players, who equalized on the gong, LOSC won at the end thanks to two saves from Vito Mannone (1-1, 3-4 tab) . The Italian was heroic on the pitch at the Vélodrome.

A month later, Bruno Genesio's men met Roberto De Zerbi's Marseillais on the lawn of the Orange Vélodrome for the big poster of the round of 16 of the Coupe de . However, the dynamics were no longer similar, with an advantage for the Olympians who remained with four victories and a draw in their last five matches. Only LOSC had managed to take a point recently in the championship. This latter team, undefeated in 19 matches, remained on three consecutive draws in Ligue 1. Given the context, regardless of the changes made in the starting eleven, victory was not an option this Tuesday, on one side like on the other.

The film of the meeting

Accustomed to traveling in the Coupe de France, it is historic in the figures, LOSC shuddered during the first act, in the volcano that is the Orange Vélodrome. More incisive, it was the Marseillais who offered themselves the first opportunities, like a cross which fled along the goal line from Vito Mannone. Following a poor clearance from the Italian, Maupay crossed hard towards Luis Henrique who did not take the ball, hampered by Gudmundsson. The latter, who had thrown himself to defend his cages as best as possible, ran into the post (8′). Touched, he tried to stay on the field, but gave way to Ismaily (19′) a few minutes later.

The entire first act mostly followed this dynamic. When the situations were not threatening enough, as with Haraldsson (15′), Cabella (18′, 28′) or Mukau (30′), OM was not missing much to hit the mark. Alexsandro was not far from scoring an own goal (18′), when Vito Mannone made a superb save on Mason Greenwood (36′). The Briton took advantage of Lille's wanderings on an offensive corner to take the entire block from behind.

A story of hands

Heroic in his cages, Vito Mannone was passive on Neal Maupay's opener. The latter had pushed a cross from Mason Greenwood into the back of the net. His goal was however refused for a logically signaled handball (38′). The Mastiffs had trembled. However, they experienced the same scenario, but in the opposite direction upon returning from the locker room. Mitchel Bakker, hungry at the start of the second half, cushioned the ball with his hand before unleashing a half-volley into the open area. His achievement was logically refused (46′), once again.

Two faces for half time

In difficulty during the first act, LOSC showed a much better face after the break, driven by the crazy energy unleashed by the Dutchman. This strong moment was reflected in particular by high recoveries, which allowed the Mastiffs to quickly obtain situations. Rémy Cabella, to name just one, could try his hand at entering the area (50′), without success.

As the minutes passed, this physiognomy gradually faded and Olympique de put their foot back on leather. This control of the ball ended with another dangerous corner in the Lille area. Vito Mannone fortunately managed to grab it at the last moment. It was surprisingly during this shift that LOSC took the lead. Found on his side, Thomas Meunier waits for the right moment to serve Jonathan David in depth. The Canadian, livelier than his compatriot Cornelius, quickly serves Hakon Haraldsson. Alone in the area, he deceives the Marseille goalkeeper at point blank range (69′) for an opening synonymous with a real cold snap in the Marseille city.

From one face to another, LOSC was then cornered until the final whistle. Even the changes made by Bruno Genesio, notably the entry of André Gomes in place of Jonathan David, symbolized this decline. Vito Mannone first repelled an attempt from Hojbjerg (73′), then blew away a contentious sequence in the Lille area (79′). The Italian then counted on his post (90+2′) to save him while the scorer, Hakon Haraldsson, missed a final face-to-face (88′). The Icelander had the KO ball at the end of his foot, but was trapped by the Marseille goalkeeper.

The thread of success was getting thinner and thinner, and even ended up breaking at the last second. When the entire injury time had elapsed, Luis Henrique fired a mischievous shot at the near post. Powerful, she snatched the equalizer (90+6′). Clément Turpin sent the two teams to penalties immediately following this draw (1-1). The cold snap had reversed, to the point that Lille seemed to have lost at the whistle. And yet…
