In Le Mag, the journalist Alain Bauderonspoke about the performance of Yanis Merdji with the Girondins de Bordeaux, against Locminé.

“Again, even if he scores… For me, it’s a big disappointment, because we never find him. His choices are often quick, he tries to play with a touch of the ball, these are balls that are often lost… I have difficulty placing this boy.”

Laurent Brun added about the Bordeaux offensive player:

“He is technically good, but there are often lost balls, he often has his back to goal, and he loses them in critical areas. But this also applies to Soufiane Bahassa on Saturday, and one of his losses leads to the first goal… We cannot afford not to be present and prompt in interventions. Indeed, if we can’t play one touch of the ball, we block the ball, and we try to play on the ground with one, two, three touches. The faster we play, the more we accelerate the game, the more theoretically we can move towards the opponent’s goal, and this is an additional possibility of scoring. But we can’t do it, and these ball losses are recurring. Aerial duels too, Yanis Merdji does not win a single one. It’s not his game, but the fact remains that when the balls arrive like that, you have to know how to negotiate them, either by deflecting, or by blocking and putting on the ground. Both of these players lost balls in critical areas, and that happens a lot. Yanis Merdji came to see us after the match, he was very lucid. He scored his fourth goal and that was really the least of his worries… But we expect more from this player, who played in Ligue 2 last year. Perhaps there is a lack of consistency. Is he used in his right position… Afterwards, he, like Andy Carroll, zoned out a lot, because they didn’t have enough balls. But we expect more from him. I think he’s a great player from a technical point of view.”
