It is becoming increasingly difficult to accurately determine player salaries at PSG. This opacity results from a new salary policy put in place by the sports advisor Luis Camposwhich is now based on performance. This approach, already applied during the extensions of Marco Verratti, Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe, considerably modifies the operation of contracts.

Remuneration based on performance

Concretely, players' salaries depend on the number of matches played over a season. A tier system establishes variable remuneration: the more the player plays and is decisive, the more he earns. On the other hand, if the player participates less in meetings, his remuneration decreases proportionally. This model aims to reward involvement and performance on the pitch, while avoiding high fixed costs for little-used players.

A policy adopted for newcomers

This new formula does not only concern contract extensions, but also recent recruits. For example, according to Loïc Tanzi, journalist at The TeamVitinha, who is about to extend until 2029, saw his contract include these performance-related clauses. This system could therefore be gradually generalized to other players recently signed to the club.

Internal resistance

However, this policy is not unanimous. Marquinhos, although having finally accepted these conditions, did so “reluctantly”, according to the same source. This feeling of reluctance is not isolated: Presnel Kimpembe is currently frustrated by his situation. He would blame his coach, Luis Enrique, for not making him play even though he declared himself fit, which directly impacts his remuneration.

A double-edged strategy?

While this model can encourage player engagement, it could also cause tension within the squad, particularly among those who feel they are not receiving enough opportunities to prove their worth. It remains to be seen whether this policy will bear fruit in the long term, or whether it could end up increasing friction between players and staff. One thing is certain: this approach marks a turning point in the contractual management of PSG.
